During his time in the creative and marketing industry Gary Sharpen has always enjoyed the challenge of contributing in ways that reach beyond agency life to support the industry in a variety of other ways.

  • NABS (National Advertising Benevolent Society). He was one of the longest serving mentors on the NABS Fast Forward Programme where for five years he helped new account handlers, planners, media planners and creatives to be better at their jobs, understand other people’s, appreciate the finer points of the industry – and learn how to win pitches
  • D&AD (Design and Art Direction). He has created and run workshops for D&AD New Blood to support young creative talent, along with judging the New Blood awards. He is also a D&AD Session Leader, creating and running “The Idea Or The App” – a series of specialist integrated digital thinking sessions
  • Royal Mail He has run specialist copywriting masterclasses, been a member of their debating panel on direct mail and served on the Creative Council
  • Clients He has created and run specialist role-reversal classes for his clients on how to write creative briefs, how to appraise creative work and how to get the best from an agency
  • Universities He has been a regular visiting lecturer to universities for 12 years
  • Bucks New University He served from 2008 – 2011 as the External Degree Examiner for the Advertising and Marketing BA at the leading integrated communications course in the UK, working with students and course leaders to maintain its exceptional standards, as well as monitoring the marking of the graduates’ degree show
  • Press He has been a regular writer of essays, reviews and articles for the creative industry press, including CampaignMarketing and Directory, as well as contributing to the consumer press
  • Awards Juries He has served on juries to assess creative work for CannesCampaign and DMA, as well as chairing the juries of D&AD and ISP. He has also served on juries in other sectors including the BSME (British Society of Media Editors)
  • Agony Uncle Enjoys being a sounding board to former employees
