Other ways The Shelf Awards works with universities

Gary Sharpen, founder of The Shelf Awards, has always employed a policy of bringing new creative talent into the industry. This has included setting up responsible, genuinely useful and paid placement schemes for students looking to gain work experience, as well as graduates trying to break into an agency, always setting them to work on live briefs alongside their full-time colleagues. He has always hired new talent wherever possible, giving them a structured introduction to the industry and agency life. He has also been a regular visiting lecturer to universities and served as the External Degree Examiner for four years at Bucks New University. In addition to running The Shelf Awards he works with universities in a number of other ways:
  • Copywriting Masterclass A one day class that mixes presentation with practical. At the end of the day each student will have written a new piece of original copy for one of their campaigns
  • Integrated Thinking Masterclass A one day class exploring what it means to really express a campaign idea in different media. Integration isn’t simply about putting the ad in an envelope but really understanding and exploiting the individual characteristics of all media from press to poster, direct mail to ambient and email to viral
  • Bespoke Masterclass Working with universities to create specific classes to address the particular needs of their students
  • Lecturing Presentation of creative work with Q & A session
  • Mentoring Regular student clinics to support them in preparing themselves and their portfolios for finding their first job in the creative industry
